The Crispin Wokingham is one of the oldest buildings in the area, dating back to the 15th century when it was constructed as a hall house. This unique design featured a main room open to the roof, with a central fireplace providing heat. Over time, the building was ‘modernised’, with an upper floor added across the full breadth of the house, along with additional fireplaces and chimneys. Eventually, it was divided into three cottages. In 1837, the middle cottage was occupied by James Green, a cordwainer or shoemaker—a common trade in Denmark Street—and his family. By 1840, he was noted as a beer retailer, and by the 1851 census, he was identified as a brewer and beer seller, with his sons, also shoemakers, residing in the other two cottages. In 1850, James Green applied for a full license to sell alcohol, which was denied due to existing public accommodation provided by the already licensed houses in the area. Despite this setback, he managed to pay off his £160 mortgage in 1854, and at this time, the building was known as The Crispin, a name it has proudly retained ever since. Fast forward to the present day, Angie and Aid took over The Crispin in 2017 from Mick, having first met in this beloved Wokingham pub back in the late 80s, where their eyes failed to meet across the smoke-filled room. Today, The Crispin is known for its selection of local ales, making it a favorite among those who appreciate the charm of Wokingham pubs.

It boasts plenty of seating, with ample covered areas, and serves as a lively venue for our annual beer festival and summer music events. Here, customers can enjoy the late evening sun, savour local ales, or take a moment for a quick smoke. Additionally, it provides a safe haven for our flamboyance of flamingos.

Commitment to Wokingham

Throughout our tenure, we have faced many challenges, including Covid lockdowns, health scares, and more recently, the difficulties posed by the cost of living crises and the building of housing developments in Wokingham and the associated difficulties of access.
